Undergrounders is a story about a 14-year-old boy learning to trust again after being on his own since his mom died when he was eight. Johnny is an Undergrounder, not a Streetie who lives on the street, fighting the drunks for a space on the grates to stay alive. When he sees kids his age playing hockey at an outdoor rink, Johnny takes a risk and pretends to be a ‘regular’ kid and gets on the ice too. The story shows the scary reality of life on the street as well as people’s capacity to be kind. The winner of the Silver Birch Fiction award in 2012, Undergrounders appeals to both girls and boys alike.
